Roblox Parental Controls & Safety Guide

Roblox parental controls now run through a dedicated Parental Controls dashboard. You create your own Roblox account, link it to your child's account, verify your age, and then manage screen time, content maturity, spending limits, and communication settings remotely from your own device. Setting Up a Child's Roblox Account

When creating a Roblox account for a child, enter their real birth date. Roblox assigns the account type from that date. As of June 2026, children aged 5 to 8 receive a Roblox Kids account and children aged 9 to 15 receive a Roblox Select account, each with its own content and communication defaults. Accounts upgrade automatically as the child ages: Kids becomes Select at 9, and Select becomes a standard account at 16. Roblox also uses age checks to confirm ages. Since January 2026, unlocking chat features requires an age check, done either through facial age estimation (a short selfie video that Roblox deletes after processing) or an ID check.

Linking a Parent Account

The Parental Controls dashboard is the foundation for everything else in this guide. From your child's account, go to Settings, then Parental Controls, and add yourself as the parent. You verify your own age with a government-issued ID or a credit card. Once linked, you view and change your child's settings from your own device, and your child cannot loosen them. Linked parent accounts replace the older parent PIN system, so restrictions now sit behind your login rather than a 4-digit code entered on the child's device.

Content Maturity Labels

Roblox replaced its old age ratings (All Ages, 9+, 13+, 17+) with content maturity labels: Minimal, Mild, Moderate, and Restricted. Minimal allows occasional mild violence and light unrealistic blood. Mild allows repeated mild violence and mild crude humor. Moderate allows moderate violence, light realistic blood, and unplayable gambling content. Restricted covers strong violence, romantic themes, alcohol, and strong language, and is only available to users who verify they are 17 or older. Chat and Communication Controls

Roblox filters all chat through automated systems that block inappropriate language, personal information such as phone numbers and addresses, and external links. Filtering is stricter for children under 13. On Roblox Kids accounts, all communication is off by default. From the parent dashboard you control who your child can chat with, restrict chat to accepted connections, or turn it off entirely. Because chat now requires an age check, a child cannot bypass these limits by claiming an older age at signup.

Screen Time Controls

Set a daily time limit from the Parental Controls dashboard. When your child reaches the limit, Roblox shows a message explaining they have hit their limit and blocks further play for the rest of the day. The dashboard also shows screen time insights, so you can see how much your child actually plays before deciding where to set the limit.

Spending and Purchase Controls

The dashboard lets you set a monthly spending limit and turn on spending notifications so you hear about purchases as they happen.
